Search engine ranking variables

Virtually every aspect of a web page is considered by the search engines. Bruce Clay, credited with popularizing the term "Search Engine Optimization" suggests there are over 200+ variables considered by major search engines. This information is guarded closely by the engines, so we are left to speculate.

However, we do have an inkling as to which search engine ranking variables are most important:

Title Tag
Page Name
Page Content
Headers
Incoming Links
Link Text

Also, the number of pages in your site is a variable in your search engine rankings. Why? if a site has 10,000 pages related to a subject, it very likely offers better information than a site with five pages on the same topic.
